FRAMA Symbols: Rivet Series

Discover the FRAMA Symbol that introduced visual balance to the FRAMA universe—in Italian glass and hand-hammered aluminum.

Created by designer Jonas Trampedach in 2011, the technique used to create the Rivet Series is a hand-hammered alternative to welding aluminum. This technique contributed to a defined and legible vocabulary that has led to an expanded collection—including the Glass Rivet Box Table as its second material iteration, with a different process of assembly inspired by its precursors in the series.

On the occasion of its ten-year anniversary, FRAMA introduces a new, limited release design in the Rivet Series: Rivet Box Table, now perforated. Playing with Rivet’s geometric logic through light, shadow, and negative space, our Anniversary Edition Rivet Box Table introduces a cutout grid pattern across its timeless aluminum frame.

Ten years in, the Rivet remains one of FRAMA's most quietly radical designs. Rooted in industrial materiality and reduced to its essential geometry, the Rivet has come to symbolize FRAMA's belief that functional objects can carry lasting meaning. The Perforated Special Edition marks a decade of the Rivet by turning its structure inside out—and letting light in as the latest material at play in the series.

In keeping with FRAMA’s approach of design with minimal intervention, Rivet Box Table, Shelf, Case, Side Table, Typecase, Cart, and Chair show the hand of their designer. As FRAMA founder Niels Strøyer Christophersen describes it: “it’s honest, straightforward—you see how it’s produced.” A defining element of FRAMA’s material exploration.

This material honesty was also at play in the Rivet origin story. In 2011 after FRAMA launched, Strøyer Christophersen could see that the initial collections were very wood-oriented as a result of the FRAMA foundations built on natural materials. In seeking balance, Niels realized the brand needed to explore new materialities. That’s when they connected with Jonas Trampedach—a designer who had been in conversation with various studios in hopes of producing the Rivet Chair. The first pieces to be produced were the Rivet Box Table and Rivet Side Table, followed by the rest of the series.

The production method Strøyer Christophersen describes gives a raw, expressive quality to the clean-lined designs—and creates an intersection between an industrial material and domestic use. Each piece is versatile and multifunctional: The Rivet Box Table can be used horizontally as well as vertically, as is true for its glass counterpart. Each piece can be used in any room of the house: their versatility allowing them to act as ideal bedside tables, coffee tables, functional shelving or simple seating at home. Well-matched for wooden tones as a visual contrast as it was originally intended, or coupled with Tasca or Petit Rond seating or tables as a collection of metals with shared design approaches and varied finishes.

As for Rivet Box Table, in aluminum or Italian glass, the sturdy, timeless piece of furniture can be arranged vertically or horizontally—and used as a table, a storage unit, a pedestal for display, a bedside nightstand, or as a multifunctional item. In metal or glass, it offers a light and open expression in any room of the home.

For further free-standing storage, discover Rivet Case, which can also be used vertically as well as horizontally while functioning as a table, storage, or display room. For wall-mounted storage, Rivet Shelf explores basic storing facets within one shape while functioning as a storage and display platform, while Rivet Typecase is a compartmentalized aluminum shelf with discrete sections meant for storing and displaying your most cherished objects.

The Rivet Side Table, meanwhile, is a versatile furniture piece suitable for any room. Its circular top is divided into three different levels, creating a dynamic surface. Rivet Cart adds bright orange wheels to the Rivet Box Table shape—an elegant, playful addition to the series. The easy-to-transport mobile cart features a tray-top with two open shelves below, combining traditional furniture craftsmanship and modern industrial production.
