THE CONCEPT
As a travelling exhibition, The Mechanics of Scent has been brought to life at Matter & Shape in Paris, at Marta in Los Angeles, and at 180 The Store in New York.
Now, the installation comes home on the occasion of Copenhagen Design Week—and expands to introduce a collection of Scent Sculptures explored by FRAMA for the first time. As we question the norms of design for the home, we are reminded that we live by our senses every day, and scent is architectural whether we can see it or not.
THE EXHIBITION
Across FRAMA Spaces, The Mechanics of Scent will be expanded upon to introduce new ways of exploring scent, through what we call Scent Sculptures, inviting visitors to explore our most sculptural transformation of the Studio Store and Apartment 57a yet.
Inspired by simple technologies—both the mechanical and the ancient—that encourage the movement of scent in a space, eight Scent Sculptures will be presented. Each sculpture an artwork and material exploration in its own right, designed to be experienced without pretense or affect. At one wall, an infused paper installation fills a Studio Store window: paper cutouts wave according to an engine that moves them as a screen and softly distributes their scent. In another window, a Rube Goldberg machine playfully leads soil spheres from FRAMA’s From Soil To Form diffuser into a pool of scent and out again.
Each sculpture is a collaboration between FRAMA and artist David Gardner, in tandem with vintage furnishings and decor that consider how this space would really be lived in—not only set up to view.

MAKING OF
We were inspired by simple mechanics, ancient technologies, and George Perec’s writing on the everyday, overlooked aspects of our interiors: including smell.
On the occasion of Design Week in Copenhagen, the exhibition concept expanded to include 8 scent sculptures: something FRAMA is exploring for the first time.
These sculptures were produced in partnership with David Gardner: an engineer who worked with us to bring these ideas to life in a way that was still recognizably FRAMA.

FEATURED SCENT
Known as FRAMA’s signature scent, as well as the fragrance at the core of The Mechanics of Scent, this year marks Apothecary’s ten year anniversary. With notes of sandalwood, cedar, and ylang ylang, Apothecary is a pure and refreshing aroma with a calming effect.
Inspired by St. Pauls Apotek, a historic pharmacy that was established in Copenhagen in 1878 and is home to FRAMA’s office and Studio Store today, a sense of homecoming emerges for the scent’s ingredients, to the interior which first inspired their combination.
LIMITED RELEASE
Take home a piece of The Mechanics of Scent: on the occasion of Copenhagen Design Week, a special edition of case in the same stainless steel as the exhibition’s central water wheel has been designed for the Apothecary Hand Cream Tube.
Available exclusively at the Studio Store and at framacph.com in a limited run of 100 pieces.
