The AML Stool: An Example of Craftsmanship

Designed by Andreas Martin-Löf

For years, Andreas Martin-Löf has been fascinated with collecting objects from old building sites or visiting new projects. These objects serve as memories, a curation of small artifacts reminding him of the design world, which have almost become personal talismans. Of all the collected items, a little stool takes center stage for Andreas. It is a matter of scale, craftsmanship, and fine details.

The mutual design approach and consideration of high-quality materials ignited the collaboration between FRAMA and Andreas. The idea behind the AML stool was born from a personal possession from Andreas’ collection, an old milking stool.

In the beginning, it proved to be a tedious process of finding the build, material, and finish that could preserve the integrity of the old milking stool while simultaneously expressing the collaborators in their language and brand values. Alas, the collaboration brought forward a product of two minds, an uncomplicated design that can stand the test of time in an array of interior spaces.

Created and envisioned as a playful item for everyday life, the AML Stool quickly became a highly versatile addition to any interior. Designed to be used across the home, AML Stool’s timeless design functions as a decorative piece, side table, and work stool. Its uncomplicated design with a round seat supported by three stout legs ensure a balanced center and a sturdy appearance, proportional in scale.

“I like the fact that something that was formerly a milking stool works so well in its new context. The size makes it perfect for freighting and dispatching in today’s e-trade, and everyone has room for a stool they can put some magazines on by their bed or use as an extra shelf in the bathroom.”

-Andreas Martin-Löf, Founder of Andreas Martin-Löf Arkitekter.

“Even though it is a small object, the AML Stool is essential to Frama’s permanent collection. Its simplicity and versatility make it a handy piece in line with our values and visual identity. Whether it’s for placing objects, stacking books, or seating next to the coffee table, it is a very accessible and sculptural item. The reintroduction of the Stool is a symbolic way of returning to our roots and rediscovering our principles."

-Niels Strøyer Christophersen, Founder of FRAMA.

Andreas Martin-Löf and FRAMA have also collaborated on designing a small lighting collection featuring the Library Lamp and the Clamp Lamp, both made out of gunmetal coated steel celebrating the pure industrial aesthetic combined with the poetic charm of a classic light bulb.
